Plaza Garibaldi, the heart of mariachi culture in Mexico City, became a poignant symbol of resilience during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Once filled with tourists and locals celebrating Mexico's iconic musicians, the plaza was transformed as mariachi struggled to find work amidst strict government restrictions. Many risked their safety to secure daily income, while the community mourned the loss of numerous musicians to the virus. This series reflects the challenges faced by mariachi during that time—a stark reminder of the vulnerability of Mexico’s informal workforce. Despite the hardships, grassroots efforts emerged, with food donations and community support providing vital relief. Through the lens of the mariachi, these images capture a moment in history defined by resilience, solidarity, and the enduring spirit of a cultural tradition.
